Bobit Avila, Philippine Star journalist, gives a get-together in Sugbu

Mr.Avila (seated, leftmost) with students and young professionals from Sugbu
Mabolo, Cebu City – Bobit Avila, a renowned columnist in Cebu City, who has been working with the Philippine Star, visited Sugbu Study Center last March 10 to give an informal get-together to university students and young professionals.

At the beginning of the get-together, Avila admitted that he didn't know what to say or how to start. Nonetheless, it was clear that he did not need any preparation as he was able to impart important messages to the audience.

According to Avila, young people lack knowledge because they don't read. People may be living now in the modern world but  there are still much to learn, and for this reading is necessary, he insisted. He especially recommended books on history and spirituality.  He further stated that there is truth behind the saying "knowledge is power."

Surprised at the audience's silent response when he asked about the Catholic Church (which he notes, from the time of the Roman Empire, still exists up to now), he chided that it is one more proof that young people really need to read, especially on history and spirituality.  He also recommended reading the life of the martyrs and "The Fourth Secret of Fatima" by Antonio Socci.

Avila also commented that he learned the important things in life outside school.  He gave the example of wisdom, something very important in life, and yet one can't find a Wisdom subject in any school. He then goes back to highlight the main message of his talk: the importance of reading.

Avila can be seen in Cebu's latest TV channel, My TV on Sky Cable Channel 28.

Summer Workcamps 2012

SUGBU is partnering with study centers from Manila, Ilo-ilo and Bacolod for various workcamps this summer.  A workcamp is an outreach and leadership course lasting 1-2 weeks.  Projects could include repair and repainting of a school or clinic, tutorials in math, science and English, catechism classes, medical missions, feeding programs and sports clinics. Human virtues and leadership talks, as well as  informal get-togethers, are also organized.  Time is also allotted for daily sports and an excursion during the camp.

Students from various universities in Manila, Cebu, Ilo-ilo and Bacolod are expected to participate, giving a wonderful opportunity to make new friends and interact with people of various backgrounds and trainings.

Private and corporate sponsors cover the great part of the project cost.  A minimal solidarity fee is collected from the participants as their own way of contributing to the project.

Interested university students should have an initial interview with a staff from Sugbu and should finish a set of initial virtues talks and mentoring sessions.

Below are the schedule of summer workcamps for 2012.
